085 – David St Maur Sheil Shares His Passion for Connecting Art with Making Veritable Land Scapes

Riding out to Lam Tsuen Valley, I enjoyed the view of the distant Tai Mo Shan peak, the banana trees and large trees that look like eucalyptus but I couldn't name off-hand. I arrive at our meeting spot and David greets me with his warm smile. We walk up to his house, lost in a small village and what immediately hits me is the space he has and the earthiness of his environment.

We sit in a shed, converted into a painting studio, filled with brushes, canvasses, various tools, but also jars and tokens collected from the environment. The scent of a fire hangs around us – some neighbour is probably burning leaf litter – and we sit for a chat.

Artists generally need to figure out for themselves how to collect their tools and media of expression. For some, it's acrylic paints. For some, it's wood, resin, fiberglass, balloons, food, bodily matter, stone, or anything else that connects deeply with the person. In David, what emerged was the drive to make art of his landscape with the actual material around him.
