Building A Garden Part 1: Design, Planning, DIY Raised Beds & Layout

This winter, I will be transforming my basic raised bed garden into the garden of my dreams. It will be larger, enclosed to keep out pests and will be more functional with multiple raised beds and trellises. This will be a DIY project that I will be building by myself, and if I can do it, I bet you can, too!

This will be a big project for me, but you can easily scale my design up or down based on your own capabilities, the amount of growing space you desire and the amount of people you can find to help you. You can keep it small, copy my design exactly or go even bigger!

This is PART 1 of what will be a multi-part series. PART 1 will focus on how I designed my garden on paper, how I purchased and received the material, and how to build raised beds. While raised beds are not necessary if you live in a location with good native soil and adequate drainage, my home is on sand, so raised beds will provide a strong concentration of nutrient dense organic matter that my native sandy soil lacks.
