January Planting Guide for Zone 9 + 10 Gardeners & Winter Growing Tips

Published
It's our first video of the year, and we're kicking things off with the most important thing to know: what to plant this month!

The winter garden is going strong, and one of the reasons why we're able to grow so much is properly using row cover.

This is out at our seed production farm in Ramona which is zone 9 (compared to our urban farm which is zone 10), and it gets a little bit chillier out here. By using row cover, we're able to keep the plants just a few degrees warmer on cold nights, and that makes all the difference.

1:48 What We're Starting In January

I've only listed some of what you can be growing (check out our calendar for a more extensive list https://sandiegoseedcompany.com/product/tools-and-merchandise/urban-farming-planting-calendar/), but this gives you an idea of what you can start from seed in January.

Cool Season Crops

Root crops are fantastic for this time of year. They don't take up much space, and most of them don't take too long to reach maturity. Plus, they're always so fun to harvest!

Greens also love the cooler weather. The ideal time for growing these is coming to an end, so get them started while you still can before the temperatures get up. Nothing compares to the flavor of fresh lettuce from your own yard, and you have a long harvesting window while the days are shorter.

There is still time to start your brassicas from seed! We get started with them back in August, but we're succession planting for months to have fresh produce.

These do take much longer to reach maturity than some of the other crops listed in this video, so that's a major factor you want to keep in mind, especially if you are limited in space.

On top of that, you have all sorts of herbs, flowers, and more that you can get in the ground this month!
