When combatting erosion on steep slopes between 38°- 45°, it is best to install your Dirt Locker® system as individual rows. When you disconnect a line of Dirt Lockers® from the row above, you will be able to see that they sit level, maintain a vertical position, and do not create tension or pulling so as to better extend the life of the product. With this method, one J hook will be required for every Dirt Locker®, plus one on each end.

This Salt Lake Valley hillside in Murray, Utah has a slope of 38° with a 260 square foot area. For this install, 65 Large Dirt Lockers were used set to 36", arranged in 6 rows of a 7,8,7,8...pattern. Each Large Dirt Locker® needs about 1.5 cubic feet of soil. Be sure to dedicate at least 50% of your system with plants. Remember, it's the root system of your plantings that grow deeper and stronger which in turn stabilize your hillside.

Watch the ways the Dirt Locker® team and Wheeler Historic Farm staff and volunteers follow a specific installation process:

1) Align top row of J hooks with string at 36" apart
2) Bring up pre-assembled row of Dirt Lockers to meet J hooks
3) Adjust the shape of Dirt Lockers® before backfilling with soil, starting from the top
4) Sculpt the sides of the Dirt Lockers® with soil to create a semi-circle shape
5) Check if each unit is vertical in position, and level across the top
6) Adjust J hooks and Dirt Lockers® if needed as you go. (top to bottom and left to right)
7) Begin planting
8) Create stepping path (optional)
