How to Grow Garlic?
It's actually incredibly easy and requires very little work on your part. Plus garlic you grow at home tastes better than store-bought, and if you grow it from leftover bulbs you bought from the grocery store, you are growing yourself free food, which is basically growing yourself money!
And yes, I grow garlic from store-bought bulbs. Or did in the past. At this point, the bulbs we plant are from leftover bulbs of garlic we grew on the farm. I have never boughten garlic from a seed company!
Roughly 6 weeks before your first frost, take a bulb of garlic, separate it from the head and plant it 3 inches in depth, 6 inches apart from other cloves or plants, and in rows at least 6 inches apart from one another. Water well immediately after planting, cover with a layer of mulch, and ignore it until you see green growth in the spring. Seriously. Don’t worry about watering it unless it never ever ever ever rains.
In about 9 months, you’ll have a slew of garlic you grew yourself and the feeling of being an accomplished gardener.
If you are new here, welcome to Shepherding Peppers Farm! We hope you enjoy a look into our lives, our garden, and our small family farm in South Carolina. We are working towards food sustainability, and permaculture, with a large family and a small couple of acres.
We hope to encourage people to grow their own food, feel confident in homesteading, and live a life both messy and beautiful, because this life comes with a bit of dirt and a lot of love.
