Tropical style garden full of bold tropical blooms ???? Tropical garden ideas & tours

Published
A sunny south-facing garden growing in Hertfordshire in the UK. Lovingly created and cared for by Mark, this tropical style garden is absolutely thriving. Mark has skillfully combined large jungle foliage with bold tropical flowers to create a tropical garden that is a treat to the eyes. The scents and sounds that this garden provides must be a treat for the senses. Brugmansias will provide a heavy scent of a summers evening while you enjoy the cooling shade cast by the enormous fronds of a tree fern. This tropical garden tour shows that every gardener has their own style and preferences, and only when you embrace your individuality will your garden reach it's true potential! Well done Mark for creating such a beautiful tropical style garden and thank you for sharing it with us.

???? From Mark:

‘Our garden is in southwest Hertfordshire, just inside the M25 motorway. It's south facing and pretty sheltered.
We've been going more and more tropical over the past 10 years. Previously the garden was a typical cottage garden for 10 years.
The coldest it has even been in the garden is minus 13 during the beast from the east. We lost 1 small tree fern.
Favourite plants are musa basjoo, begonia, xanthosoma, all lillies and all impatiens species.
I have virtually given up on canna as its almost impossible to keep virus off them. I do use them as annuals though. I've replaced colocasia with xanthosoma as they're much easier to grow and store over winter. I've also given up with all gingers as the garden just isn't big enough to give them the space they need to flower.
Dream plant is a large rhus typhina to add more height to the middle part of the garden. We should be buying one this winter.
My tips for anyone considering getting into tropical gardening is think about the space above your head, try and cover your fences with plants and save up and buy large permanent plants like musa, tree fern and fatsia to add structure. When you find a plant you know you can grow well, grow lots of them! Attics are ideal for winter storage. Also, rip up the rule book, you can have whatever you like in your garden. If it makes you happy, grow it and yes, there are roses in our garden.’
